I think an eyelash curler really helps mine. I have very thin/short lashes and without a good coat of GOOD mascara and my curler, I look like I have NONE! ugh!

I'm afraid to use too many coats of mascara as I'll end up looking like Tammy Faye. It just seems to get clumpier as I go, so I stick with one nice coat and then a dab at the tips of the lashes a bit. I also use a lash comb to try and keep everything separate.

I have never used one either. Do they really work? They must or they wouldn't be in such wide use would they? Maybe I will have to experiment!

As for using an eyelash curler, this is what was listed on the back of box that mine came in.

  1. Start with clean, dry lashes. While your eye makeup should already be in place, you should not have already applied mascara.
  2. Looking straight into the mirror, open the eyelash curler and place it over the eye, sandwiching your eyelashes are in between the two rubber or silicone eyelash pads. You can leave your eye open, or choose to close it, whichever is most comfortable for you. However, you will get a closer curl by leaving your eye open.
  3. Make sure the curler is as close to the base of the lash, by the eyelid, as possible.
  4. Without using a lot of pressure, gently close the curler at the base of the lash. Be as light as possible. Once you feel that you are not pinching any skin, apply more pressure, making sure to keep the pressure firm, but gentle.
  5. Hold the curler in the center of the lash, and gently apply pressure again, just as you did in the previous step.
  6. Repeat with the other eye.
  7. Add a coat of your favorite mascara.

Reading this topic brings to mind what might be a dumb question, but none of the women in my family ever used them, so I am clueless.

Just how DO you use that eyelash curler contraption, anyways?

I bet a couple of thin coats of mascara would make them thicken up. Just be sure they are good and dry before applying the extra coats.

Have you tried waiting for the mascara to really dry and do 2 or 3 coats of the mascara to make them really thick? Be sure to comb them out between coats so they don't get clumpy and stick together.

I can't say for sure but I think you use the eyeliners with the little sponge tip on the opposite end to lightly smudge it a bit after you apply. You may be able to use a makeup wedge to do the same.

Sooty Lashes

I tried the 'smoky eyes' trick, and it worked okay, but doesn't look right on me. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks on how to make lashes look thick and sooty, to frame the eyes better?

Thanks!
