I did it and it was a total mess. Burned my scalp and won't be doing it myself ever again. I hated the color so much I went out and colored over it. I'm happy with how it looks now but it really needs rest.
I am glad that all of you can get a giggle when looking back on some of your "hair scares". I remember a hair cut that I got once that literally made me cry for days, I thought it was the end of the world for me. Now that I am older and wiser I realize that it will always grow out, our just fall out. As long as my hair still grows I am ok, at the rate I am thinning on top though I may have another crying jig in the future...note to self....save money for expensive wig!
I have never tired blonde. I did do a few face high lights that were in the light brown family and then a clear gloss on top years and years ago. The gloss was wonderful because it made my hair shine. Now it is just a cut for me.
I went bleach blonde in my teens, let the bleach stay on to long and ended up with quarter sized blisters in the back of my head.
I have been doing total coverage due to the fact that my hair is over 50 percent gray, my hair grows really fast and I need to color at least once every 3 weeks, not to mention that blonde colors will tend to look brassy if not taken care of. I plan on doing highlights or "frosting" to see if it will be easier to take care of.
How funny about your Aunt, Toni! I've did a few numbers on my hair in the past. My favorite was when I tried to bleach it out and it somehow turned a baby blue! It was AWFUL!
I went to a salon once to "go blond." What a disaster. Yikes. I left with this brassy orangey hair. Never again. I also sat there with the goop on my head for over an hour. I don't think the colorist knew what he was doing. An old friend of mine used to use a home dye called "blonde" something -- this was over ten years ago so I can't recall the name but it said blonde on the bottle and it was from one of the major hair color companies. Blonde perfection or something like that. It worked pretty well with her hair. Mine is a dark brown underneath with lighter on top due to the sun. I think highlights are the way I will be going now, instead of trying to go blonde again.
My sister decided for Kotei - that's a tournament for a Collectible Card Game called L5R - she was going to dye her hair white with a blue streak. Her hair is normally a nice oak brown... it turned out to be such a disaster that it took her over a year to grow out.
I have to tell a story about the time my aunt, who has very dark brown hair, bleached her hair and it turned out a brassy orange instead of a true blonde. She of course didnt like the results and asked me to dye it an auburn color; being a teen at the time I quickly agreed. I went through the whole process of color and we decided that it was best to not leave it on the full amount of time being she had bleached it less than a month prior to this. Well let me tell you when I started rinsing I almost had a heart attack, when she saw it in the mirror I almost died....at her hands. She had auburn hair with this bright green hue! The chemicals from the bleach kit and the hair dye apparently didnt like each other too much and she had to deal with that color for almost a year til she dared to try it again. The funniest part of all this was it happened right before Halloween so she was able to tell everyone that she did it for a reason lol.
It really depends on your hair, Petunia. I did it when I was a teen and went that funny shade of strawberry blonde (I do have deep auburn.copper hair now, but it was darker then, and platinum blonde when I was about 5 - weird). Some people who have coarser hair, like my husband, need a bleaching agent before using the color if you want a pure blonde shade.
